World fish Center, has an opening for Director of Policy, Economics and Social Science at Penang, Malaysia.
The WorldFish Center is an international research center of the CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research). The mission of the WorldFish Center is to reduce poverty and hunger by improving fisheries and aquaculture. The Center is a world-class scientific research organization, and employs approximately 270 staff in nine countries. Staff members engage in collaborative research with partners from more than 50 countries spanning the globe. The WorldFish Center is headquartered in Penang, Malaysia.
The Position
The Center is seeking a senior researcher with excellent leadership and management skills to direct the Policy, Economics and Social Science discipline. As a member of the senior executive team, this is a unique opportunity for a gifted individual to contribute to the mission of the WorldFish Center and make a personal impact on the lives of millions of people in developing countries. The Director is expected to harness and develop the strengths of this disciplinary group (comprising approximately 50 people) and to ensure that research is innovative and directly contributes to WorldFish’s mission. The Director is expect to work with the Natural Resource Management and Aquaculture disciplines to develop transdisciplinary research programs that overcome traditional obstacles in the search for solutions in Development Science. The work will be demanding and challenging and will involve considerable travel.
Responsibilities
- Develop, lead and mentor a college of globally recognized expertise to ensure WorldFish leadership in this discipline at global and regional levels;
- Work with the Natural Resource Management and Aquaculture disciplines to develop transdisciplinary research programs that overcome traditional obstacles in the search for solutions in Development Science;
- Develop applied, scholarly research leadership in global/regional/rural development and community economics;
- As one of three Discipline Directors, play a key role in establishing the research direction and priorities for the Center and actively supporting coordination within WorldFish and with partners; and
- Report to the Director General.
Qualifications
Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, such as Economics, Social Sciences or Policy;
Ten years of research and management experience;
Track record of published, peer-reviewed work that has made a substantial contribution to understanding and advancement of policy, economics, social science or a related discipline. Demonstrated research accomplishments in regional or rural development issues and community economics;
Recognized as an eminent scholar in a particular field of knowledge who has demonstrated a profound understanding of a discipline, a capacity to extend knowledge in that discipline and the ability to communicate the results of scholarly endeavor in, and the precepts of, the discipline;
Ability to lead and inspire a group of researchers to work on transdisciplinary research programs in global/regional/rural economics and development;
Ability to identify and develop relevant research programs and provide scientific leadership for stakeholders and potential investors;
Experience in developing and managing large multi-partner and multi-disciplinary teams to deliver quality projects;
Experience in writing grant proposals and obtaining external funding for research; and
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
