2008 REEP Report

{This report was read by co-editor, Charles Kolstad.}  I'm Rob Stavins, editor of the Review of Environmental Economics and Policy, and I'm pleased to update you on behalf of my co-editors -- Charlie Kolstad and Carlo Carraro -- and our sterling managing editor, Suzanne Leonard.

As you know, the Review is intended to fill the gap that exists between the popular press and scholarly environmental and resource economics journals. Our articles, symposia, and features are rigorous, but non-technical in their presentation.

We, or rather, Oxford University Press has published 4 issues so far, with the 5th issue to be published shortly. And we have more-or-less locked up manuscripts for issues 6 through 9 (that's through the winter of 2011). We've got some wonderful symposia and articles forthcoming, but I won't name the authors, since I don't have time to name everyone, and I don't want to leave anyone out.

Articles published by the Review are commissioned by the Editors, but are also subject to anonymous peer review. We don't accept unsolicited manuscripts, but we most certainly do welcome proposals for articles in the form of brief outlines. Of 61 such unsolicited proposals we've received, 6 have been accepted. So the acceptance rate is about 10%. If we receive more high-quality proposals as the journal becomes better known, this rate may increase. We're very pleased with our pro-active commissioning of articles, and here we have a very high success rate, on the order perhaps of 75-80%.

Although we're very pleased with the growing circulation numbers and citation counts, the success of the Review will best be measured by whether the journal is actually read and hence of real value. And so, we -- the editors, Charlie, Carlo, and myself -- will welcome any and all suggestions about how the Review can best serve your needs. Thank you.
