AERE Summer Conference Goes Virtual!

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and the resulting disruptions to travel, including policies put in place by many institutions restricting both domestic and international travel indefinitely, as well as fiscal uncertainties related to budget cuts, the AERE Board of Directors has elected to move the AERE Summer Conference to an online format. Please continue to hold available the original conference dates (June 2-4, 2021) and watch for further details as the reviewers complete the abstract review process and the Summer Conference Organizing Committee finalizes a session schedule and makes decisions on a technology platform.

Please also mark your calendars for the 2022 AERE Summer Conference, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency Miami, June 1-3, 2022. Dave Kelly and Chris Parmeter of the University of Miami have generously agreed to pick up their organizing and hosting duties again next year.

AERE's Annual Winter Meeting was also held virtually on January 4, 2021. The 2020 AERE Fellows Laura Taylor (Georgia Tech) and Bill Schulze (Cornell University) offered brief remarks. New AERE President Karen Palmer recognized outgoing President Dan Phaneuf (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and outgoing board members Mary Evans (Claremont McKenna College) and Paulina Oliva (University of Southern California) and welcomed the newest members of the AERE Board of Directors Sarah Jacobsen (Williams College) and Sathya Gopalakrishnan (Ohio State University) as well as ex officio board member Christian Vossler, who replaces Sheila Olmstead as the JAERE Editor representative on the board. Many thanks to all those who serve!

President Palmer also recognized AERE's University and Institutional members and updated members in attendance on AERE's current membership and finances.

Finally, AERE board member Lynne Lewis announced the AERE Scholars Program, a one-to-one mentoring program for early career post-PhDs.  The program is still accepting applications for mentees until March 15.

Congratulations to Oates Dissertation Award Winner

The 2020 Wallace E. Oates Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award for a doctoral dissertation in environmental or resource economics was presented to Katherine Wagner. Katherine received her PhD from Yale University. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. In July 2021, she will join the University of California, Berkeley as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. Katherine’s dissertation, "Essays in Environmental Public Finance", is a stellar combination of policy relevance, an innovative area of research, and crisp writing demonstrating both in the clearest way possible. The creativity in research questions and design as well as the execution of the empirical analysis are exceptional both in her sole-authored work and in the co-authored chapter. Her research on the insurance market of natural disasters combines questions at the heart of environmental economics, public finance, and economics more generally, and opens up new avenues for research and policy work – both theoretical and applied. In addition to receiving a plaque and a $1,500 cash award, Katherine's dissertation abstract will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (JAERE).

The deadline for nominations for this award for dissertations completed between August 16, 2020 and August 15, 2021 is September 1, 2021. Learn more
